Moonglu help the Harrogate Homeless Project

Moonglu, the independent bike shop located on Blossomgate in Ripon are raising money for a local charity, the Harrogate Homeless Project

A weekend trip to London really opened the eyes of bike shop owner Neil Dunkley.

"Kelly and I managed to spend 2 days in London with our girls over the Christmas holidays. Whilst we had a fantastic time, what struck us most while walking through the busy streets was the level of homelessness. I know it affected both our girls but our youngest daughter in particular struggled to understand why these people don't have warm homes to go to and food to eat".

"During our time away I also missed the Ride for Homeless organised by Struggle Events in Harrogate. I would have liked to participate and contribute to what was a brilliant idea and it has got me thinking about how I can help".

After some thought about how they could raise some money to help the Harrogate Homeless Project, Neil came up with the idea of selling new or nearly new cycle clothing.

"As a cyclist of 20 years + I have accumulated a significant amount of clothing, some of which I have barely worn. We all have our favourite kit and wear it all the time, while other kit stays in the wardrobe. Maybe we buy something and it's not quite right, it doesn't fit properly and we never send it back. So why leave it in the drawer forever?"

Neil has now dedicated a clothing rail in the shop to unwanted new or nearly new cycle clothing with all the proceeds from the sale of these garments going to the Harrogate Homeless Project.

Initially launched to the members of Moonglu Cycling Club, the response has been overwhelming and clothing has been flowing in by the bag full.

The scheme is double edged, cyclists can get rid of some unwanted clutter but there are also some real bargains to be had.

"We have had bags and bags of clothing already, people have been very generous and although we haven't put out every item yet, I have seen some quality, virtually brand new jerseys in there from the likes of Rapha and Castelli. Prices are starting from as little as £5".

Moonglu are now ready to open this up other local cycling clubs and cyclists. Initially they asking for donations of new or nearly new jerseys and shorts.
